Zaya Younan

The history of Younan Wine Estates

Founded in 2016, La Maison Younan currently owns seven 4 and 5-stars hotel châteaux (in France and Portugal), three golf courses, a design company (MPA in Paris), a cigar company (El Septimo in Geneva) and also 3 Wine Estates.

Its founder, Zaya S. Younan, an American businessman of Assyrian origin, is a lover of French culture, its heritage and its riches. He wants to revive and support the French art of living. Zaya S. Younan's dream of owning a vineyard in the prestigious Saint-Emilion region became a reality in 2017 with the acquisition of his first vineyard: Château La Croix Fourney, subsequently renamed Château la Croix Younan. His passion for France, its culture, its châteaux and its way of life was the driving force behind this unique winegrowing adventure.

Since its first vineyard acquisition in 2017, La Maison Younan has made the quest for excellence the driving force behind its efforts to profoundly transform the vineyards it acquires: Château La Croix Younan (Acquisition 2017),  Château Zaya (Acquisition 2018) and Château Ascumbas (Acquisition 2022)

Located in the famous Saint-Emilion region, on Bordeaux's right bank, Younan Wine Estates produce exceptional quality red wines predominantly made from Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.

“In our quest for excellence, we are determined to leave our mark on the next vintages of our 3 vineyards. We've started by renovating the cellars, followed by a rigorous selection of oak barrels to ensure the best possible vinification and ageing process. We want the best to produce Saint-Emilion grands crus in the pure tradition of its terroir. The terroir provides everything. Man accompanies the vine through his work. We vinify with heart, because making wine is an art, not a hobby.” Zaya S. Younan

Three châteaux, three vineyards

Château La Croix Younan embodies the passion and ambition of La Maison Younan. Its history began in the 1950s. This 8-hectare vineyard, acquired in 2017 by La Maison Younan, produces wines that symbolize the richness and opulence of Saint-Émilion Grand Crus. Formerly known as Château la Croix Fourney, the name change embodies Zaya S. Younan's determination to put his stamp on the quest for excellence. Now called Château la Croix Younan, the vineyard favors quality over quantity, and rivals the region's finest wines.

Château Zaya is distinguished by its proximity to the famous Saint Emilion Grands Crus Classés: Château Pavie and Château Ausone... Named Château la Garelle by the previous owners, it is located on the site of the former Relais de Poste of St Emilion. Acquired in 2018 by La Maison Younan, the name change symbolizes rebirth and renewal. The total renovation of the wine-making and ageing cellars in 2022 is the high point. The vines, with an average age of 30 years, offer a rich and complex palette of grape varieties, with a predominance of Merlot (80%) but also a significant proportion of Cabernet Franc (19%).

Château Ascumbas is steeped in history, bearing the name given to the region before the arrival of the monk Emilion. The 5-hectares vineyard extends over a single plot. Acquired by La Maison Younan in 2022, the estate's first mission is to improve viticulture and vinification processes, as has been done at the group's other two properties. Composed of different types of terroir ranging from clayey-siliceous to sandy, the estate is made up of vines with an average age of 35 years and produces predominantly Merlot and Cabernet Franc grapes. The plots of land are adjacent to prestigious Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classés properties.
